Janubasti

The knee joint is called Janu Sandhi in Sanskrit; hence the name Janu Basti is given to the procedure done on knee joints. In this, the knee joint is bathed with warm medicated oil or freshly prepared herbal decoction. Depending on the condition it can be practised over both the knee joints or on one knee joint. Knee joints are considered as sandhi Marma in Ayurveda (joint type in vital areas). So the Janu Basti is specialized knee therapy or massage which rejuvenates the Janu marmas, the marma points found around the knee area.

This is an effective treatment for those suffering from knee discomfort and pain, Osteo-Arthritis, and knee immobility. By bathing the knee joints with warm medicated oil or herbal decoction and allowing the knee to sit in a pool of herbal oil or herbal water for about 30 to 45 minutes, in which the oil is held in place by a dough dam, the oil draws out inflammation and soothes acute knee joint pain, especially if the pain is chronic or due to sprains or osteoarthritis. This is a great treatment for athletes, hikers, and anyone who has begun experiencing the subtle (or not so subtle) pains that come with an ageing body.
